Mortgage life insurance
Mortgage life insurance (assurance solde restant dû) repays the outstanding capital of the home loan if the borrower dies before the end of the loan.
It protects the family, who keep the property without having to continue the repayments, and the bank, which almost always requires it to grant a loan. The premium depends on the amount borrowed, the term, and the age and health of the insured person.
The borrower does not have to take it out with their bank: comparing several offers can noticeably reduce the total cost of the loan.
