District of Luxembourg

A historic and picturesque district in the heart of Luxembourg

Nestled at the bottom of the Alzette valley, just below Ville-Haute, the Grund is one of the most emblematic and picturesque districts of Luxembourg City.

Its old houses, narrow lanes, bridges and the river running through it give it an almost village-like atmosphere, even though the historic centre is only a few minutes away.

A historic, peaceful and charming district

The Grund is one of Luxembourg's oldest districts and part of the historic area listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its atmosphere is very different from that of the urban districts on the plateaus. Here, the small streets, historic buildings and banks of the Alzette create an intimate and highly recognisable setting.

Despite its proximity to the city centre, the Grund retains a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere, particularly away from the main thoroughfares.

Schools and family life

Because of its small size and historic character, the Grund has fewer schools and family facilities within the district itself.

Residents nevertheless benefit from the immediate proximity of Ville-Haute and the neighbouring districts, which have many schools, crèches and childcare facilities.

Walks along the Alzette and the relatively sheltered setting also provide a pleasant environment for residents.

Shops and services

The Grund is best known for its restaurants, cafés and cultural venues, which add greatly to its charm.

The range of everyday shops is more limited, but the immediate proximity of Ville-Haute provides quick access to boutiques, supermarkets and services.

The district is also home to the Abbaye de Neumünster, a major cultural centre in the capital.

Transport and mobility

The Grund enjoys a central location despite sitting at the bottom of the valley.

A public lift links the Grund directly to Ville-Haute, making it much easier to walk to the centre.

The district is also accessible by bus and offers many pedestrian routes linking the capital's different historic areas.

The tram does not run directly through the Grund, but it is easily accessible from Ville-Haute.

Property in the Grund

The Grund property market is very particular because of the district's small size and the historic character of its buildings.

It mainly consists of apartments and a few houses in old buildings, often full of character.

Supply is naturally limited, making it a different market from Luxembourg's large residential districts.
